Dilemma with toploader 4-speed and Hurst Shifter installation
WebJun 1, 2004 · First step of installing the aftermarket Hurst shifter is to first position the shifter using a standard duty magic wand. Have the two big bolts that retain the shift control inserted in it when you place the shifter in position. Now tighten them only finger tight. Next clip the plastic ties and replace the shift levers.

WebAug 31, 2012 · Insert the pin to make sure the shifter is in neutral, put the trans arms (levers) in neutral and adjust the rods. No big deal. I think what you are calling "shift rails" are actually the shifter "rods". The "rails" are internal parts in the trans. WebJan 15, 2008 · If the transmission is a 390 specific Toploader, you've got more problems than the shifter installation. The 390 Toploader's input snout is too short to work with a smallblock bellhousing. The snout isn't going into the pilot bearing/bushing, leaving the input shaft unsupported. That may have caused the hard shifting, not the shifter.
